Aftercare

Give your piercing the care it deserves

Congratulations!

You are now the owner of a brand new shiny piercing!

With this, you will have also received a bottle of NeilMed Piercing Aftercare this is to help keep your piercing clean throughout the healing process!

Things to expect

Initially within the first few weeks of having a piercing, things you may expect are:

  • Localised swelling/redness

  • Localised pain/tenderness

  • Bleeding and Bruising

  • A light coloured clear/yellow/white discharge that forms a hardened yellow “crust”

You may experience all or just some of these things, but all are natural parts of the healing process!

The Cleaning Process

It is important to keep your piercing clean throughout the healing process too, it is vital for a happy healthy piercing,
and this is where your NeilMed Piercing Aftercare comes in handy!
-

To clean your piercing, carefully spray the area with your Aftercare,
then with either a clean dry cotton bud or a clean dry piece of kitchen roll,
gently but thoroughly clean around the piercing,
making sure to dry any excess Aftercare from the area.

There is no need to move the jewellery around when you’re cleaning your piercing.

Repeat this super easy process twice daily to help support your body healing!
-
In addition to this, rinsing your piercing whilst in the shower for 2-3 minutes gently softens any hardened crust.
This allows you to gently wipe away the crusties to prevent a build up

Keeping crusties away
keeps your piercing happy!

-

When you are not cleaning your piercing, there is no need to do anything else to it.

An awesome little tip is to treat a fresh Piercing as if it is Stitches!

-
What is meant by this is

- Make sure to have clean, washed hands when cleaning the Piercing.

- Make sure to keep movement to an absolute minimum; NO twisting, turning or playing with the jewellery/piercing location.

- Make sure to keep the area dry! This can best be done with the coolest setting on a hair dryer!

DO’S/DON’TS

DO

  • Wash your hands before touching the piercing site.

  • Keep your piercing clean with appropriate aftercare.

  • Keep your piercing dry (hair dryer is best!)

  • Look after yourself!

  • Book in for a Checkup for your Downsize!

  • Take care around the piercing with everyday life.

  • Keep in touch!

DONT

  • Sleep on your piercing! Sleeping with a memory foam travel cushion gives support for your head but allows elevation for the piercing. (Always keep fresh bedding throughout the healing process)

  • Play with your piercing.

  • Rotate or move the jewellery.

  • Remove the jewellery or change jewellery prematurely.

  • Submerge the piercing.

  • Apply cosmetics to the area.

  • Use any aftercare products that are not recommended (ie homemade salt water solutions/creams/oils/chemicals)

Check Up and Downsizing

It is also important to book in for your checkup when recommended!

Many piercings, particularly most cartilage piercings, will need downsizing.

You will have been fitted with a longer post to allow room for swelling within the initial stages, but once that swelling has reduced it is key to downsize to an appropriate length post. Although a piercing may no longer hurt, and may “feel fine as it is”, it is absolutely key to have it thoroughly checked to assess if a downsize is due.

Failing to downsize a piercing at the correct stage can lead to migration or rejection (when the piercing shifts to an angle or moves/pushes out).

Some piercings may need early or multiple downsizes, but that will be explained during your piercing.

Having jewellery that perfectly fits your body’s healing/healed anatomy is key!

Last but not Least

Getting a new piercing is such an exciting experience, but it is vital that we take care of our healing bodies.
A piercing is fundamentally a wound, so taking a little extra time out of your day to look after it is natural.

Healing a piercing can often be a lengthy process that takes a lot of care and patience, but providing you look after yourself and the piercing - you will be sparkly forever!

You are also of course not alone in this process too! Sian is always just a message away if you have any concerns, questions or just need your mind out at ease!

Please always keep in touch throughout the healing process, we are always here to help.
